What is fyre?

Most of you know by now that last year we began referring to our youth group as fyre. This acronym stands for "Faith Youth Reaching for Eternity." One of my burdens as a youth pastor and even for my own personal life is that we are on fire in our service to the Lord. Unfortunately, for many of us, our fires are often more like coals that are very close to burning out than fires that are close to burning out of control.

I've chosen Matthew 6:33 as our theme verse for our youth group. Matthew 6:33 says "But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Why this verse? I believe that if we are seeking God first in our lives that we will be on fire for Him. What, in your life, are you seeking after? More importantly, though, what or who is first in priority in your life? As we gear up for a new school year and a new year in youth group, I want to encourage you to begin asking yourself what is it that I am seeking after first in my life? Am I on fire for God? Do I really want to God's will in my life, or am I simply saying what I know my parents, teachers, and pastors want to hear so that I can "get them off my back". My prayer is that as you interact with this blog that it will draw all of us primarily closer to the Lord, but also closer to each other!

Because my desire is for the parents of the teens in this youth group to follow this as well, I'd like to take a moment and talk to you. In order for the youth group to be a success in your child's life, you MUST be willing to encourage your teens at home. Today, more than ever, you must be an integral part of your teen's life. I see this youth group not only as a ministry to your teenagers, but also as a ministry to you, the parent.

Let's get on "fyre" for God this year! It takes one spark to catch the forest ablaze - will you be that one spark?
